when president obama named seattle police chief gil kerlikowske as his new drug czar, i thought it would be the beginning of a new era of more progressive federal marijuana policy.
apparently not.
at a press conference in fresno yesterday, the new drug czar showed himself to be just as ignorant and closed-minded as every drug czar before him. according to kerlikowske:
“Marijuana is dangerous and has no medicinal benefit.”
at a time when medical marijuana legislation is booming across the country, and more and more research is revealing marijuana's tremendous medical potential, kerlikowske's statement comes across as wilfully ignorant and a throwback to the days of "reefer madness".
please consider visiting the Marijuana Policy Project's action center to let the drug czar know that his statement is misguided and out of line with scientific fact:

So happy Four Twenty everyone. Yes today is that "made up" holiday for pot heads. Almost every time someone uses the term "four twenty" or "420" someone always asks what that means and where it came from. Well depends on where you look, but this explanation seems to be the most commonly accepted one:
Known Myths: * "Police dispatch code for smoking pot is 420". The number 420 is not police radio code for anything, anywhere. Checks of criminal codes suggest that the origin is neither Californian nor federal. For instance, California Penal Code 420 defines as a misdemeanor the hindrance of use of public lands. *" There are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana". Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana. This number goes up and down depending on which plant is used. * "April 20th is National Pot Smokers Day". Well, it is now; but that wasn't the origin. * "April 20th is Hitler's birthday". Yes, it is his birthday. But, as 420 started out as a time, not a date, his birthday had nothing to do with it. * "April 20th is the date of the Columbine school shootings". This happened after the term was already in use. May have been why the date was chosen. * "4:20 is tea time for pot-smokers in Holland". Tea time in Holland is at 5:30 pm, or is it 2:30 pm? Seems no one is quite sure when the wonderful people of Holland drink their tea.
The Origin Revealed
According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking teens who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high and its use spread among members of an entire generation. A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420."
So it literally started as a grass roots phrase and just caught on.
Either way today has become a national day of honoring the weed and pushing for legalization. Several spots in California have festivals with fields full of people smoking pot together, nothing more in common than a love of the smoke. So yeah, Happy High Holy Day. Smoke one for me!

During his election campaign, President-elect Obama pledged numerous times to end DEA raids on individuals who use or provide medical cannabis in accordance with their state law. The U.S. Attorney General is the member of the cabinet who will implement Obama's criminal justice policies, including federal marijuana enforcement.
Confirmation hearings for Obama's nominee, Eric Holder, are scheduled to begin on January 15th before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT). Please help NORML make sure the next Attorney General keeps the promises made by President-elect Obama! Write (http://capwiz.com/norml2/home/) or call Senator Leahy's office at (202) 224-4242 and say:
"Hi, my name is ___________ and I am calling about the Attorney General confirmation hearings. President-elect Obama said numerous times during his campaign that DEA raids on individuals legally qualified to use medical cannabis in their states are a waste of resources and that he would end that policy. 72 million Americans live in the 13 states with medical cannabis laws. Please ask Eric Holder if he will uphold Obama's promise and end DEA raids on legal medical cannabis patients.
The hearings will be on C-Span on Thursday...let's see Mr. Holder answer a straight forward question regarding the clear and emerging conflict between states favoring medical access to cannabis and a federal government that yields no quarter on cannabis prohibition--even for the sick and dying.
